A USD 500,000 payout to Solomon Islands, through the Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company (PCRIC), following Tropical Cyclone Maila highlights the tangible benefits of premium support funded by the Global Shield Solutions Platform (GSSP), enabling a timely financial response to climate shocks.
Frankfurt, 28 April 2026
The Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company (PCRIC) has made a payout of USD 500,000 to Solomon Islands following the impact of Tropical Cyclone (TC) Maila on 4 April 2026. The payout was triggered under the country’s tropical cyclone coverage, providing immediate liquidity to support response efforts.
Payment of the premium-supported policy by the Solomon Islands government was made possible in part through premium financing by Global Shield Solutions Platform (GSSP), managed by Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. This support allows GSSP to contribute to Pacific Island Countries’ (PICs) premium payments for underwriting years 2023/24 to 2027/28. Solomon Islands is among the countries benefiting from this support, which aims to strengthen financial resilience against climate-related risks.
In preparation for such events, Solomon Islands developed a Disbursement Plan outlining how potential payouts would be utilised. Although the plan has not yet been formally finalised, the current payout provides an opportunity to test and further refine the disbursement planning process in practice.
Following the disbursement, PCRIC will conduct a payout utilisation review, expected to generate valuable insights to strengthen Disbursement Plans across member countries ahead of the 2026/27 policy renewals. This learning process is an important step toward enhancing the effectiveness and transparency of rapid financing mechanisms.
The payout to Solomon Islands demonstrates the value of premium support in enabling a timely financial response to climate shocks. While it does not create additional financial liabilities for GSSP beyond the committed premium subsidies, it provides important evidence of the impact of coordinated international support in advancing climate and disaster risk finance solutions.
“This payout demonstrates how premium support can translate directly into timely financial protection for vulnerable countries,” said Dr. Annette Detken, Head of the Global Shield Solutions Platform (GSSP). “By supporting access to risk transfer solutions, we are helping countries like Solomon Islands respond more quickly and effectively to climate-related shocks.”
PCRIC CEO Mr. Aholotu Palu expressed appreciation for GSSP’s contribution and also acknowledged the support provided by WFP toward PCRIC’s premium support program in the Solomon Islands.
